Extraordinary theatre in unexpected spaces

- Advertisment -

Camberley Theatre has been working with Farnham Maltings and Arts Partnership Surrey (APS) to join together and create a new opportunity for Surrey residents to enjoy theatrical experiences on their doorstep. Recognising that not everyone finds it easy to make the trip to a theatre, they have developed a new scheme to take professional theatre to new and unexpected spaces such as an art gallery, village pub or shopping and leisure centres.

Surrey Community Touring 2019 includes two theatre pieces suitable for children and adults to enjoy together. These include Once Upon a Pillowfight, a wonderfully inventive mix of theatre, acrobatics and storytelling from leading contemporary company Upswing and The Bird Show; a fun, clowning piece from up-and-coming company The Last Baguette. Both pieces are mostly programmed at weekends and during Surrey’s October half term.

The third piece is Bubble Schmeisis from Nick Cassenbaum. This adult show is a charming and infectiously funny account of intimate and personal true stories about identity, home and getting ‘schmeised’ (washed) by old men. It forms part of Mole Valley’s Arts Alive festival which runs throughout October.

“We wanted to work with community venues and support them in trying out a new theatre experience in their space. We plan to create more opportunities for people to access great theatre in their community and to develop a network of local promoters for future touring. I’m equally surprised and delighted by the interest we’ve had, and the mix of venues we will be visiting.” Katy Potter, Producer, Farnham Maltings.

The venues include Stepping Stones Pub at Box Hill, Tandridge Leisure Centre in Oxted, Addlestone Community Centre and The Square shopping centre in Camberley. Ticket prices from just £2 – £7 per person making exceptional theatre very affordable for families. Full details of the tour and the shows can be found at farnhammaltings.com and artspartnershipsurrey.org.uk.

Further touring dates will be added for Spring 2020. Farnham Maltings and Arts Partnership Surrey are busy planning their next phase of touring and support for community venues to keep programming.
